The Russian Thistle Crisis

Claremont, California

1997 (collaboration by Kathryn Miller and Michael Honer)

A mixed media installation for an exhibition at the Claremont Graduate University that takes a closer look at the Russian Thistle (tumbleweed) and the role it has played in our local western history for the past 100 years.

The Russian Thistle was introduced to South Dakota accidentally in the late 19th century, and has effectively dispersed its seed from Canada to Mexico. Environmental degradation and poor farming practices continue to encourage the spread of this plant. This accidental contamination was the inspiration for the project and an artists' book.
