Sky Sweeps - Located along the south shore of the Chehalis River in the City of Aberdeen, the site's character is defined by a tidal zone filled with the remnants of an extensive wharf system that served as an intersection between maritime and lumber industries. Now that the wharves are gone and the nature of the lumber business has changed, Sky Sweeps assumes the role of mediator between the past, present and future. The three pivoting sweeps (a term for a long oar) are each 85' high and are counter balanced to record the movements of the prevailing on-shore winds from the west. When the air is still, they stand vertical; with air movement, they begin sweeping the sky.
Wind Riders - The campus of Washington State University's Tri-cities campus is located along the Columbia River in Richland, Washington. The site is adjacent to a city maintained bicycle path that follows the edge of the river. The installation serves as a cross roads and rest stop for bicyclists, joggers, walkers and students and includes: a bronze drinking fountain in the form of a wooden barrel, park benches, three bicycle wind vanes, and a garden of native plants.
Arbor Vitae - Polished black India granite measuring 12' X 15' with a photo-etched satellite image of the state of Colorado taken at 350 miles above the earth. Making sense of the world (learning) is a process of making connections, using analogies and metaphors and the noticing of patterns. Many of the patterns we recognize and our process for organizing them are dendritic (branching) in form. Located in and on the façade of Coolbaugh Hall, the environmental sciences building at Colorado School of Mines, Arbor Vitae (Tree of Life) examines branching patterns in living and non-living things, going from micro to the macro. Because the surface is highly polished, reflected images of passing clouds can be seen moving by, much like what one would see from the vantage point of a satellite.
Kinetic Shade Canopy is to be located at Roosevelt and Central Ave, on a triangular transit plaza in downtown Phoenix. Valley Metro Rail light rail system is being designed to serve the greater Phoenix area. The canopy consists of two 30' dishes perforated with 1-1/4" holes. One dish is solidly fixed to a central trunk. The other is suspended 6" above the first. Sunlight coming through the two levels of perforation will create Moiré shadow patterns on the ground. These shadow patterns will change as the sun moves overhead or when the winds move the suspended canopy.
