Artist StatementMy work utilizes the methods and perspectives of art and science to examine how modern humans experience "nature" at a historical moment when we have greatly transformed even the most remote environments. Through my projects I explore the intricacies of microcosms in a variety of environments, and I look into effects that human interaction has had on local environments and native species. I am strongly influenced by prior generations of environmental artists, particularly their emphasis on pushing the boundaries of what constitutes art and its proper locations. In my own work, I rethink the gallery as a site for environmental reflection, frequently referencing natural history museums as spaces used for representing "nature" and science as a mode of interpreting it. This allows me to explore forms of human mediation rather than focusing on more "direct," apparently unmediated experiences of nature. In my projects and installations I work with a wide variety of media, including painting, drawing, photography and digital imaging, book-making, collected materials, and sculptural elements. |
