KATHRYN MILLER
Contact: kathryn_miller@pitzer.edu
Kathryn Miller currently lives in the greater Los Angeles area. She is an Associate Professor of Art with an interdisciplinary
emphasis on Environmental Studies at Pitzer College of the Claremont Colleges in Claremont, California. She also holds a graduate
faculty appointment in the Art Department at the Claremont Graduate University.
She was born and raised on the coast of Brazil where she was greatly influenced by the local music, language, art, culture and
vegetation. She attended college in the United States and received a B.S. in Biology from George Washington University, M.A. in
Biology from Sonoma State University, and an M.F.A. in Art from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
In recent projects she has used various methods to intervene with degraded and compromised areas of the landscape in order to restore
local wildlife and more self-sustaining plant systems. With a background in sculpture, photography, biology, and ecology she is
interested in the role of artist as social participant, involving herself and her work in local environments and issues.
Her work is based on an interest in the natural environment and the desire to look more closely at life supporting systems.
Many of her projects are collaborations with people from other disciplines. Through both her teaching and projects she hopes
to cross and obliterate delineated boundaries in art to connect with various other disciplines.
