Doug Quin (North Carolina, US) does it all-straight field recordings, subtle reconstructions, contemporary composition, and museum sound installations. While in Antarctica on a National Science Foundation expedition to McMurdo Sound, he could hear-and feel-the sounds of giant weddell seals through six feet of sea ice. His hydrophones picked up a strange and wonderful sonic community, including weddells, leopard seals, orcas, ice fracturing, and Adelie penguins diving into the water.
