Jackie Brookner, I'm You

Jackie Brookner, I'm You, 2000, moss, volcanic rock, plants, metal, polluted water, 67 inches x 112 inches x 50 inches

Although I'm You resembles hands, its shape is actually based on the microscopic structure at the center of the leaves of some species of moss. A mister periodically sprays the pond's polluted water onto the moss form, which drips back into the pond. Moss growing on the lava rock covers the metal hand forms and the wetland's water plants bio-chemically filter pollutants, transforming polluted waste into invaluable nutrients.
