These before and after images capture the town dumpís transformation into a thriving salt marsh. After six years of preparation, ten people spent only three days installing the bioengineered design. For the first time in 100 years, freshwater flowed down a hill to meet the sea. They planted thousands of salt marsh grasses and created wave attenuation barriers out of coconut fibers. During the next spring, a deep freeze changed into a powerful thaw and the complex root systems that had taken hold, melted and slid down the hill. This further exposed the already vulnerable plantings to storm waves at high tide, so Rahmani had to design a second wave attenuation barrier that countered the wave action.21 |
